I got my Nikon D7000 five month ago with a Sigma 18-200mm lens. The camera is super but the lens is just OK. So I decided to buy my second lens last month. After a lot of searching online, I choose the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D lens. (Here are two nice reviews of this type of lens: Ken Rockwell & photozone.de )

Here are some photos using D7000 + Nikon 85mm f/1.8D. I took them in Lübeck (wiki link), which is a tiny city with a big long history in north part of Germany. And the very model in some photos is my cute rabbit - Barbarian. Enjoy!

Xcode is one of my daily used coding environments, which recently got its 4.4 update. And, i got trouble!!!

First, xcode 4.4 does not offer the MacOS 10.6 SDK, which is the base of our project. That is easy part, just copy the SDK from the old version. If the old version was 4.3.3, you should be possible to find them in

/Application/[Xcode 4.3.3]/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.SDK

Here is the first tip: always backup your old SDK files before you update your xcode!!!

Second, the pbxcp command is removed from xcode 4.4, which causes error in compiling our project. Same trick, copy from the old version. If still 4.3.3, then should be in

/Application/[Xcode 4.3.3]/Contents/OtherFrameworks/DevTollsCore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/pbxcp

One more tip here: just follow the error information, which usually show the “should be” position of the missing files.

Things looks fine now, but as our project will be based on MacOS 10.6, I still have to manually change some setting in xcode ide: 1. set the Base SDK to Mac OS X 10.6, as we need; 2. Max OS X Deployment Target to Max OS X 10.7, as the new xcode 4.4 needs. And, wow, done. But it works only if you don’t regenerate the project file, which means, if you run cmake to generate the project file automatically, you have to change this two positions each time and recompile everyting == painful!!!

So why not just switch back to xcode 4.3.3, the good old days. The install package can be freely downloaded from apple development site, of course, an user account is required. As the package is about 1.9GB, it might be not a good idea using a 56KB modern connection. …(time flies)… unpack the dmg file into your download folder and rename it as you wish (maybe Xcode 4.3.3.app), then move it into the /Application/ folder. Now open then terminal and type something like:

sudo xcode-select -switch /Application/Xcode\ 4.3.3.app/Contents/Developer/

, and the default xcode version should be changed back to 4.3.3. Of course, you may always use

xcodebuild -version

to check the current xcode version.

Now delete all your automatic generated project files and rerun your cmake to get a totally clean new version. Remember to change the default program for opening .project file to the 4.3.3 xcode instead of the 4.4 xcode (you can do it by right click the project file and choose “open with”).

If you are lucky enough, you are now back to the 4.3.3. But in my case, I got a crash just after the xcode gui start up. What now?! Close the xcode completely, and reopen it again without loading any project file. After the gui start up safely, open the Organizer and choose Projects, delete all old Derived Data in the corresponding project. That is the true happy ending.!!!

Around one week ago, the Engadget blog reported the achievement by Qian Qin, who successfully make the wireless inductive charging mod on Samsung Galaxy S. He also uploaded a YouTube video clip.

To reveal more details of this impressive modification, I construct my copy version and take illustrating photos for key steps. Basically I divide my modification into two sections: the first section focuses on the remodel of micro usb plugs, the target is to reduce the space requirement of the plug; the second section is the migration of inductive circuits from the Palm Pre back cover.

Step 1.1. Remove all pins from a micro usb plug, the pins are still useful in later step (see Fig. 1). Fig. 2 shows a clear plug without any pin.

Recently need to use MKL in Ubuntu, the installation and configuration of linking are a bit difficult for me. So I just leave some notes that I have tested for future reference, most words are directly copied from internet.

|*******************************
|** Part 1. Installation ************
|*******************************
001. Go to website software.intel.com

002. Click on “Free non-commercial” under “Tools & Downloads”

003. Download “Intel® C++ Composer XE 2011 for Linux” and “Intel® Math Kernel Library (Intel® MKL) for Linux”, your email-box will receive letter, which contains the series number for installation.

004. Unpack those two package files, then in each main folder, run:

sudo ./install.sh

005. Choose default setting with series number. Then installed files should be in /opt/intel/

006. Edit the .bashrc file in your user’s home folder, add following codes. Those two path are supposed to be your file location, it make change a little. And “ia32″ is the parameter of platform, you can choose what you want following the instruction in file iccvars.sh and mklvars.sh.

source /opt/intel/compilerpro-12.0.1.107/bin/iccvars.sh ia32
source /opt/intel/mkl/bin/mklvars.sh ia32

007. Save and close .bashrc file, run:

source ~/.bashrc

008. test path:

which icc

|*******************************
|** Part 2. Linking in Program ******
|*******************************
009. Add MKL 10.x header file INCLUDE path in your compiler command line, your makefile or configure file. (default: /opt/intel/mkl/10.x.x.xxx/include)

010. Add MKL 10.x library path in your compiler command line, your makefile or configure file. (default: /opt/intel/mkl/10.x.x.xxx/lib/32)

011. Specify the corresponding libraries in your compiler command line, your makefile or configure file.
With static link, they are as follows:

-Wl,--start-group
/opt/intel/mkl/10.0.xxx/lib/32/libmkl_intel.a
/opt/intel/mkl/10.0.xxx/lib/32/libmkl_intel_thread.a
/opt/intel/mkl/10.0.xxx/lib/32/libmkl_core.a
Wl,--end-group
/opt/intel/mkl/10.0.xxx/lib/32/libiomp5md.so -lpthread -lm

With dynamic link,

-L/opt/intel/mkl/10.0.xxx/lib/32/
-lmkl_intel.so -lmkl_intel_thread.so -lmkl_core.so [-liomp5md]
[-lpthread] [-lm]

the path maybe slightly different due to different installation, just take a look in the install folder.
Note 1: In case of using static linking, the interface layer, threading layer, and computation layer libraries must be enclosed in grouping symbols (<-Wl,--start-group, -Wl,--end-group).
Note 2: Specifying MKL library path in the link command line is required. For example, -L/opt/intel/mkl/10.x.xxx/lib/32, so that the linker can search for real archive libraries.
Note 3: The order of listing libraries in the link line is essential, except for the libraries enclosed in the grouping symbols.

012. Set MKL library path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable before running application, e.g.,

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/intel/mkl/10.x.x.xxx/lib/32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
